There is never a lack of recreational opportunities with the lakes surrounding the Twin Cities, and Lake Minnetonka is no exception. The lake is known for its game fish such as largemouth bass, but is also thick with walleye, yellow perch and sunfish, among others. For those who do enjoy sailing or angling, the lake provides multiple docks with easy access. Additionally, several private charter services are available to book a cruise for your family, which is a great way to both enjoy the amazing scenery of the area, as well as familiarize yourself with the different parts of the lake.
Lake Minnetonka is also host to one of the finest regional parks in the state. This 292 acre area offers plenty for both adults and children, making it a popular weekend spot for family gatherings. For those looking for some exercise, the park hosts three trails; one paved 2.5 mile trail for hikers and bikers, one mile-long path for pedestrians, and a mile long turf trail for pets. Kids will be drawn to the sprawling 20,000 square foot creative play area with a nautical theme, and which includes a cargo hold, climbing structures, and many slides—including two twenty-foot slide rides. Your kids will certainly enjoy their weekends at the park just as much as you.

LAKE HARRIET- LAKE OF THE ISLES- LAKE NOKOMIS
Lake Harriet, Lake Nokomis and Lake of the Isles
If you ask residents of Minneapolis what sets their city apart from other major metropolitan areas, you will quickly learn about the extensive lake system that runs through the southern part of the city. Though you can easily find the urban lifestyle and towering skyline in downtown Minneapolis, the lakes offer a terrific alternative for those who prefer the solace and beauty of living near water. Between Lake Harriet, Lake Nokomis, and the Lake of the Isles, Minneapolis offers a tremendous amount of outdoor recreational opportunities, and with plenty of available and affordable real estate nearby, the time has never been better to finally invest in your dream lakefront home.
The lakes are connected as part of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, an elaborate system of trails and bike paths that are widely popular for exercise and recreational walks. Lake Harriet connects with Lake Calhoun on its north end through the William Berry Parkway. Harriet is home to two beaches, which many take advantage of during the summer months, as well as its famous castle-shaped bandshell. From June to September each year, the bandshell hosts concerts nightly, offering an eclectic assortment of music from big band to bluegrass to rock and roll. The Minneapolis Pops Orchestra makes its summer home here, offering a blend of popular and traditional music each Saturday. Additionally, Lake Harriet contains a brand new picnic shelter, tennis courts and fishing docks, so there are plenty of outdoor activities to indulge in.
On the other side of Lake Calhoun is the Lake of the Isles. Restored by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board in the early 1900’s, the Isles has been transformed from a shallow lake and marsh area into one of the most majestic lakes the city has to offer. In addition to its summer offerings, this lake is one of the most winter-friendly, offering an ice skating and hockey rink. In warmer weather, its bike paths, soccer field and fishing docks are very popular.
For those especially interested in fishing, Lake Nokomis offers some of the richest waters for fishermen in the entire state, with many game fish found here. Along with Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun, it is one of the three lakes used for sailing, and is one of the hosts for the popular Aquatennial, an annual celebration of Minneapolis’ aquatic tradition, featuring shows and competitions that draw large audiences. Nokomis is also a popular sporting lake, with fields available for football, baseball, softball, soccer and tennis.
Some of the most beautiful architecture in all of Minneapolis real estate can be found near the lakes. Many large single-family and multi-story homes and condominiums boast luxurious porches and balconies with a beautiful view of the water. If you are lucky enough to own a boat, there are plenty of homes with a large enough area to accommodate you with easy convenient access to many of the lakes’ boating docks. With the real estate market currently in favor of those seeking to buy, the time has never been better to locate the home of your dreams at a reasonable price. If you are more interested in renting, there are scores of apartments and duplexes for rent immediately near the lakes, as well as in the Uptown district, which is well within easy walking distance to the lakes and trails. I strongly encourage you to contact me to set up an appointment; I am confident that I can find a home that suits your own, as well as your family’s needs.

LAKE CALHOUN
Lake Calhoun
One of the most gorgeous areas of Minneapolis, Lake Calhoun is located in trendy southwest Minneapolis, commonly known as Uptown. This scenic location is a perfect choice for those wishing to enjoy all of the amenities of city life, while also having immediate access to all of the outdoor recreational benefits the lake has to offer.
In the early twentieth century, Minneapolis purchased the lands surrounding what is now known as the “Chain of Lakes” in order to preserve them as public parks. Today, the lakes are among Minneapolis’ most distinctive features, and provide the city with its common nickname, the “City of Lakes.” This area is one of the districts that make up the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, a green path that circles the city through almost all of its notable neighborhoods, including the Downtown Riverfront, the Mississippi River, Minnehaha, Theodore Wirth, Victory Memorial, and the Northeast areas. Bikers and pedestrians regularly use the byway as an alternative and scenic means of transportation and recreation.
Lake Calhoun is 3.1 miles around for pedestrians, with a 3.2 mile bike and skater trail. On any given Minnesota summer day, a wide range of people can be found enjoying the great breeze the water provides, whether exercising, fishing or reading a book near the shore. For those who like to get right into the water, the lake is also popular for swimming, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing, among other aquatic activities. If that isn’t enough, Calhoun is only one of Minneapolis’ famed Chain of Lakes, connected to Lake Harriet on the southern end, Lake of the Isles on the northeast, and Cedar Lake on the northwest side.
One of the most popular sections of the lake, Thomas Beach, is host to the annual Minneapolis Aquatennial, a ten day extravaganza featuring water-ski and sailing performances, a block party, and numerous other local events and competitions. If you haven’t stretched your sea legs much, don’t worry—Thomas Beach also offers swimming lessons and the ever-popular Lake Calhoun Sailing School, open every year from April to October for children and adults of all ability and experience levels. The Calhoun Yacht Club and the University of St. Thomas Sailing Club are also based here and regularly draw large, enthusiastic audiences.
Because of its position at the edge of the Uptown district, Lake Calhoun boasts a great scene for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The famous Hennepin Avenue, within easy walking distance from the lake, offers several movie theaters, a wide range of fine and casual restaurants, and many of the trendiest bars and nightclubs Minneapolis has to offer. Just a couple of miles further down the road lies Loring Park and downtown Minneapolis, both easily accessible by car, bus, or bike. All of these reasons make Lake Calhoun one of the most desired areas to live in the entire Twin Cities.
In terms of real estate, Lake Calhoun offers a little bit of everything, from affordable apartments, duplexes and condominiums, to single family homes, to extraordinary lakeshore residences and high-rises. Some of the more interesting architectural work in all of Minneapolis real estate can be found here; in the current market, buying a home near the lake is an incredibly wise investment. Many beautiful homes are currently available with amazing views at affordable prices.
